DESCRIPTION OF DRUGS
AMALAKI (Phylanthus emblica)
Fruits contain Tannin, Essential Oil. This is a good Anti-inflammatory, cooling and Diuretic. In combination dilates bronchial passage.
ALPINA GALANGA (DUMPRASME)
This drug contains Champheride, Galanginin and Alpinin. Dilation of the peripheral blood vessel is observed when they are perfused with Physiological Saline Solution. The important action of this drug however is on bronchioles. It was observed in experimental
Animals, even in small dose, their produced a marked dilation of bronchioles and this effect is much more pronounced when the dose is increased. Asthma like condition produced artificially in animals by administering pilocarpin is immediately relieved in small doses of tincture or powder of Alpina Galanga.
BOERHAVIA DIFUSA (PUNARNAVA)
This contains an alkaloid, nitrates of potassium etc. This has been found to exert a marked diuretic action on the kidneys. It stimulates the respiratory center.
SIDA CARDIFOLIA (BALA)
A systematic analysis of the drug was done by Gosh and Dutt (1930) and the following constituents were found:- Presence of an alkaloid 0.085%, essential oil fibers, starch etc. The action of alkaloid resembled the action of ephedrine. Chopra and De (1930) found the same alkaloid and identified as a sympathomimetic drug resembling the pharmacological action of that of Ephedrine. This has been in use as a cardiac stimulant in Hindu medicine from age long. The experiments carried clinically found that this drug is useful in alleviating distressing symptoms in conditions like asthma and other respiratory ailments.
